Equity, diversity & inclusion

A diverse and inclusive community is able to offer and harness more viewpoints and experiences, leading to increased creativity in solving difficult problems. The CCP4 Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) team strives to counter biases and remove barriers that are currently hindering truly diverse participation in the development of the CCP4 suite and the science that supports it.

People involved

The ED&I team gets together every 2 months to discuss progress on the implementation of CCP4’s ED&I roadmap.

A pathway to equal and diverse participation

The ED&I team is working towards achieving long-term change as measured by:

  • Progression towards more diverse representation at senior levels, including the: Core Team, Executive, and Working Groups 1 & 2.
  • Featuring a diverse range of speakers and attendees at national and international CCP4 workshops and annual CCP4 Study Weekend.

Concrete actions

The ED&I team is committed to identifying and removing barriers that hinder diverse participation in the development of the CCP4 suite and the science that supports it. These challenges have long existed in the physical and computational sciences. While it is still early stages, we note that diversity has improved in recent successful recruitments.

We have produced hiring best practices guidance for achieving a more equitable recruitment process. This guidance is not binding and is not intended as a replacement for the policies of relevant institutions but as an additional point of reference.

We know there is significantly more diversity at the early career stages, and therefore CCP4 Study Weekend invitations encourage speakers to nominate an ECR representative, particularly if that person will increase diversity at the conference. We believe having ECR scientists speak disrupts hierarchies and encourages other ECRs to present and ask thought-provoking questions that might have otherwise been buried by fear.

We know scientists with caring responsibilities are often not able to make multi-day meetings or have to cut their attendance short. Most CCP4 meetings are now hybrid, providing full online participation via Zoom (watching and presenting) and Slack (asking and answering questions). Special care is taken not to schedule meetings during school breaks.

We offer a quiet room at the CCP4 Study Weekend so neurodivergent individuals can have a place to decompress while still being able to follow and take part in the meeting.

Our events have started requiring attendees to sign up to the CCP4 Code of conduct (below), which details the consequences of unprofessional behaviour and states the mechanism for reporting of incidents.

Our ED&I policy for CCP4 organised and sponsored events can be downloaded below.
