We are looking for a Structural Biology Technologist (at post-doctoral level) to manage the protein crystallography, biophysics and computational modelling facilities of the Structural Biology Core of the Discovery Research Platform for
Hidden Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh. The position is available for an initial period of three years, with the possibility to extend.
The Discovery Research Platform for Hidden Cell Biology is a seven-year £9m Wellcome-funded platform that provides a transformative research environment at the University of Edinburgh for uncovering previously hidden aspects of cell biology.
It was launched in December 2023, and includes a Structural Biology Core that aims to elucidate protein structure and function at atomic to cellular scales. The Structural Biology Core includes infrastructure in protein crystallisation and computation, and
a newly refurbished cryo-EM facility housing a Thermo Fisher Glacios 2 cryo-electron microscope.
This position will manage the protein crystallography, biophysics and computational modelling facilities of the Structural Biology Core, including local protein crystallisation, biophysics and computation infrastructure, alongside X-ray
crystallographic and small-angle X-ray scattering data collection at Diamond Light Source. The role will involve user training and assistance in protein crystallisation, crystal handling, remote X-ray diffraction data collection, processing and structure solution,
alongside in-person SAXS data collection and analysis, and computational modelling of large protein complexes using programs such as
AlphaFold2 (and AlphaFold3). There will be opportunities for extensive intellectual input in challenging research projects and involvement in publications through collaborations with users. It will involve regular visits to Diamond Light Source,
and may include collaborations with beamline scientists in advanced methods such as serial, in situ and long-wavelength crystallography. This work will involve a diverse user base, including challenging crystallographic and integrative modelling targets such
as recursive/fibrous protein assemblies and DNA/RNA-protein complexes. position can be tailored to the expertise and interests of the successful candidate, including – but not limited to – involvement in the cryo-EM facility, biophysics and advanced recombinant
protein systems. This position is ideally suited to a PhD graduate with a passion for structural biology, who wishes to utilise cutting-edge methods in X-ray crystallography, biophysics and computational modelling to enable a wide user base to solve challenging
structural problems through integrative structural biology approaches.
