Install for CRANK 1.2.0
------------------------

CRANK is distributed as a gzipped tar archive. This archive contains
the program CRANK, CRUNCH2, BP3, AFRO and GCX. CRUNCH2 is a program
for substructure determination, BP3 is a program for maximum likelihood
substructure refinement and phasing, AFRO is for FA calculation and GCX
is a program that enables CRANK to be run via a UNIX script.

Note! CCP4 version 6.0 or later is needed for crank.

1) Download the crank-XXXX-VV.tgz file for your required platform(s) from:

	 http://www.bfsc.leidenuniv.nl/software/crank

2) Untar the crank tar file

     tar xvzf crank-XXXXX-VV.tgz

3) Set the environment variable CRANK_120 to the main crank directory (ie.
this file is $CRANK_120/INSTALL) and add $CRANK_120/bin to your path:

	csh or tcsh:
        setenv CRANK_120 "/directory/to/crank"
	setenv PATH "$PATH:$CRANK_120/bin"

	bash:
	 export CRANK_120=/directory/to/crank
	 export PATH=$PATH:$CRANK_120/bin

4) Install the CCP4i interface using the file "crank.tar.gz" in
the crank/ccp4i directory with the following steps.

    (a) Start ccp4i (as the CCP4 system administrator)
    (b) From the "System Administration" menu, choose the "Install Tasks" option.
    (c) From the "Task archive" panel, select the "crank.tar.gz" located in the
        crank/ccp4i directory.
    (d) Click on "Apply" and restart ccp4i

*NOTE* crank version 1.2.0 interface will overwrite the older crank ccp4i distributed
in CCP4 in the "Program List" and "Experimental Phasing" module. However, if you have
installed CRANK's version 1.X.0 ccp4i interface, you will need to uninstall it before
installing 1.2.0's interface. Please also see the README file in the ccp4i directory
to fix the bug in crank's ccp4i interface described in the BUGS file.

5) To use a new SAD or SIRAS target function in automated model building in ARP/wARP (which
is the default for many pipelines), install the program "refmac5D" - it is quite powerful
for building with SAD data or when using SHELXC/D/E pipeline - see the web site
http://www.bfsc.leidenuniv.nl/software/sadrefine/ for more details. *If you have download
a version before July 2007, please download a newer version of "refmac5D" from the above
website, as it has been improved.

6) (Optional, but recommended) If you wish to test if the binaries distributed with CRANK
are working, go to the "test" directory and type "sh ./mad.sh" or "sh ./mad-withoutbuilding.sh".
Running the mad test set without ARP/wARP takes under 15 minutes on a linux box with an intel 2.4GHz
processor. If the test didn't work, you might have to recompile the binaries distributed in CRANK.
See the file COMPILING for more details.
