\section{Demonstrations of GUIs - Session 1}

\begin{enumerate}
\item Mike Hartshorn (York) {\em Tcl/Tk interface to FFT} \\
A simple interface to FFT written in Tcl/Tk allowing control over
input data and parameters.
\item David Wild (Salk Institute, La Jolla) {\em AVS interface to CCP4} \\
Hierarchy of AVS networks to run standard CCP4 procedures. New version
of AVS allows Motif-style interface.
\item Martyn Winn (Daresbury) {\em DISguISE} \\
Inherited from CCP11 and partially adapted to CCP4. Simple interfaces
to individual programs.
\end{enumerate}

\section{Minutes of the previous meeting and matters arising}

The minutes of the meeting held on February 28th were accepted.
David Waller asked when version~3.2 would be brought out. He was
reassured that there were no plans for a new release, at least
for several months.

\section{ Study Weekend 97}

Gideon reported on the progress of preparations for the next Study Weekend,
and handed out a provisional timetable.
The meeting will be held at York University and will be on the 3/4 January.
After complaints that the subject matter was not `non-standard',
the title has been changed to `Recent Advances in Phasing'.
Phil stressed the need to begin with long and general introductory
talks. Some further ideas for the meeting were to be gleaned from the
MAD workshop being held in Grenoble. Phil is to invite Eric de la Fortelle
to speak\action{Phil}.

500 rooms (70 en-suite) and a lecture theatre have been provisionally
booked. York were waiting for confirmation, which should have been
sent by the Daresbury conference office. Sue will chase this up\action{Sue}.
The Daresbury conference office are to charge \pounds200 / day for
2 persons to organise the meeting. Sue was unhappy with the possible cost
of the Daresbury conference office and wanted to tender for a better
deal. She will set up a tendering exercise between Daresbury and
York\action{Sue}.

There was some debate on the 1998 Study Weekend. Friday/Saturday will
fall on 2nd/3rd January which was considered to be too soon after the
Christmas festivities. It would be better to postpone the meeting
by a week, but this depends on when university terms start. Of the
possible non-university locations, Chester is too small and the
Lord Daresbury has inadequate facilities for the lectures. It was decided
that the dates of term of possible university locations should be
checked before making any decisions\action{Everyone}.

\section{Venue and date of the next meeting}

The next meeting was set for {\bf Wednesday 25th September} at
Birkbeck College, starting \mbox{11--30~am}.

\section{Any other business}

David Waller suggested a survey of users via the Bulletin Board asking
what systems were used, what supporting software users had, etc. The
results would be of general interest, as well as answering specific
questions, such as how widespread is the use of VMS or how many users
have access to AVS. David agreed to set up the survey and colate the
responses\action{David}.

Paul Emsley requested that it be possible to set up several installations
of CCP4 for different platforms using the same source code. This would
require that {\tt configure} generate several makefiles, one for each
installation of the libraries and executables. Sue said that while it
was a nice idea, it was vital that such a change worked perfectly before
it was released. Paul will help with the implementation of
this\action{Paul,Adam, Peter D.}.

Phil commented that the installation of the {\tt x-windows} programs
was in a mess, and that this was a higher priority. The Daresbury staff
have been waiting for a quiet moment to go over this\action{Martyn,Adam}.

It was generally agreed that support for native {\tt make}s should
be dropped, and that {\tt gmake} should be recommended. CCP4 should
distribute {\tt gmake}, but GNU need to be consulted.

Regarding help on obtaining data from the anonymous ftp site, those
present were reminded that the README files (type {\tt ftp> get README |more})
sometimes contain useful information.

The working group committee thanked Adam and Martyn for the hard work which
ensured that the release of version 3 had gone very smoothly.

\section{Demonstrations of GUIs - Session 2}

\begin{enumerate}
\item Tom Oldfield (MSI) {\em Scripts for creating dialogue boxes} \\
Dialogue boxes for preparing program input. Generated by simple script
which can be edited as needed.
\item Kevin Cowtan (York) {\em Xsight} \\
Quick demonstration of Xsight, part of the Insight II suite from MSI.
\item Tom Flores (EBI) {\em DISguISE and JAVA} \\
Description of the concept behind DISguISE (later used by CCP11).
Use of Java as a platform-independent language that can be used
over a network.
\item Mike Hartshorn (York) {\em Tcl/Tk} \\
General overview of interpreted language Tcl and the associated
toolkit Tk.
\item David Wild (Salk Institute, La Jolla) {\em AVS interface to CCP4} \\
Hierarchy of AVS networks to run standard CCP4 procedures. New version
of AVS allows Motif-style interface.
\item Paul Emsley (Glasgow) {\em ZLDB} \\
Review of ZLDB created by Jan Zelinka. GUI based on database structure.
\end{enumerate}

These presentations were followed by a general discussion on the
requirements for a CCP4 GUI. A draft specification has been drawn
up (see separate sheet).
