1. {\it Minutes of the previous meeting}

The minutes of the meeting held on July 6th, 1992 were agreed, with
one amendment: Peter Daly stated that, contrary to the minutes no
agreement was reached on avoiding ANSI C-specific constructs. The
problem relates particularly to VMS users as at present DEC does not
supply ANSI C compilers for VMS\@. Peter Artymiuk explained that such
a compilers should soon become available on VAXen.

2. {\it Study Weekend 1993}

Lindsay reported on the final program of the Study Weekend. Only Dave
Smith had not been confirmed as a speaker so far. However most of the
speakers had not supplied detailed titles for their presentation. The
final program was accepted by the meeting. The maximum number of
participants was set at 300. There is no possibility of packing more
people into the Lord Daresbury Hotel lecture room. The final
selection of the applicants is to be made by Neil and Lindsay in
collaboration with the Daresbury Laboratory Conference Office.

3. {\it ESF-NEACBM Working Group 2 meeting in Paris}

Sandra reported on the meeting in Paris. She pointed out the
increasing number of continental participants taking part in the
ESF-NEACBM meetings.

Groningen are trying to convert their programs to read MTZ files.
Jorge Navaza's AMORE program for molecular relacement is to be made
CCP4-compatible (by Eleanor) and added to the suite.

Sheila asked about SQUASH\@. Eleanor replied that it is not freely
available. It was developed at York by an SERC MSc.\ student, but was
later sold to Molecular Structure Corporation.

4. {\it CCP4 Secretary replacement}

Wojciech had resigned as CCP4 secretary to take a position in Poland.
He complimented the CCP4 community on the atmosphere of the group and
thanked them for their collaboration. The meeting thanked him for his
work on CCP4's behalf.

David Rice reported on discussion with david Blow about a replacement
and presented a proposed job description which was discussed. The
consensus was that suitable candidates should have a background in
protein crystallography, with an interest and strong background in
computational techniques. Further input to the procedure could be
passed to David Rice or David Blow.

5. {\it Updated program list\/}

Following discussion at the Paris meeting, Wojciech presented proposed
lists of programs to be `supported', `unsupported' and removed from
the distribution. The name of a maintainer/expert is to be associated
with each supported program; they will be consulted when problems are
reported which can't be sorted out at Daresbury. The lists were run
through with a frank exchange of views as to the merits of certain
programs and a consensus arrived at of the programs in each category
and the support people's names. Wojciech was to amend the lists and
circulate them for final comment. Copies of the final versions are
attached.

6. {\it Automated installation under Unix\/}

David Love described the automated Unix installation procedure for the
suite now being distributed. Eleanor reported her experiences with
it. Kim pointed out that ``developer's'' compiler switches had been
made the default for some systems. This had been done on purpose but
had caused serious problems due to compiler bugs and more
uninitialised variables in the programs than anticipated.

7. {\it New sub-releases of the suite\/}

David also described the release policy which entails `major' version
numbers (currently an arbitrary 2.1) with minor version numbers
indicating bug fix releases e.g., 2.1.3. These are made available as
`patches' to the previous release for convenience and advertised on
the e-mail list. Eleanor asked what intervals there should be between
releases. The minor releases are made as and when bugs show up which
are deemed sufficiently serious to merit them.

It was stated that all documentation should be written in Unix `man'
format. Phil asked for guidance in doing this and David Love was
asked to provide a guide.

8. {\it Possible purchase of a CCP4 workstation for Daresbury\/}

David Love described why he felt that a workstation at Daresbury
dedicated to CCP4 use rather than parasiting off the experimental
group's Iris would help provide better services such as improved
network access for developers and users and hosting a less troublesome
system for the bulletin board. He presented a costing based on Sun
hardware. It was suggested that half the money could be found from
CCP4 funds if Daresbury could find the rest, but there was some
unhappiness at the suggestion of using Sun hardware rather than
Silicon Graphics.

9. {\it Any other business\/}

Neil raised the question of support for visitors from CCP4 funds. It
was pointed out the funds are stretched but it might be appropriate to
support short-term visits aimed specifically at program development if
the case arose.

10. {\it Venue and date of the next meeting}

The next meeting was set for Thursday Jan. 7th, 1992, at York
University, \mbox{11--30 am}.

D. Love (Acting secretary)
