{\it 1.  The minutes of the meeting of 3rd May 1989 were agreed.}

\bigskip
{\it 2.  Matters Arising}
\medskip

With reference to item 3 of the minutes of 3rd May 1989 the secretary
reported that Daresbury Laboratory would maintain a Vax service for
at least the next 5 years and central funds may be used to contribute
to the cost of replacing DLVD.

\bigskip

{\it 3. RA post for CCP4}
\medskip

The RA post for CCP4 has been taken over by Peter Daly, from the 3rd of July,
and he was welcomed to the meeting.

\bigskip

{\it 4. The 1990 Study Weekend on Accuracy and Reliability of
Macromolecular Crystal Structures}
\medskip

There was a long discussion on the choice of suitable speakers
for this meeting. Ian Tickle was asked to produce a list of
speakers who had agreed to attend the forthcoming studyweekend,
and send this to Daresbury by the end of August so a budget
could be set and approved before the official invitations could
be sent.

\bigskip
{\it 5. Progress of the new LCF library routines and Header System}
\medskip

Eleanor Dodson gave a brief statement on this topic and Jan Zelinka
reported that he had a working system that was available for testing.
Part of this work is being undertaken in Hamburg by Sandra McLaughlin and
Howard Terry and Phil Evans indicated that he would like to see a detailed
set of specifications before testing and code generation was to get too
advanced. There is a meeting of the EACBM working group 2 in Hamburg on
the 18th of November 1989, where final agreement should be achieved.
Ian Clifton has been working on the Laue software and had reached the
same conclusions as CCP4 that the Laue system for storing data was
lacking and needed replacement and was interested in using the new LCF
routines in the Laue work. (Andrew Leslie has also indicated that he
would use the new LCF/Header system in OSCGEN/MOSFLM)

\bigskip
{\it 6. Planning of a replacement or enhancement of PLOT84}
\medskip

With the appointment of Peter Daly and the close cooperation
between Daresbury staff for CCP4 and Laue workers it was felt that
we now have the manpower to produce a more portable and enhanced
graphics set of routines that would also have an X-windows option.
This work is to be undertaken at Daresbury and will be offered for
testing at a later date. There is a need for a high quality font
for final artwork to be included in this package and Ian Tickle
offered to send an ascii font file to Daresbury. The secretary
indicated that all the necessary code was at Daresbury and needed only
to be put into a suitable form, after a scaling system was drawn up.

\bigskip
{\it 7. Future Direction for CCP4 at Daresbury}
\medskip

Don Akrigg suggested that with the two staff at Daresbury that
CCP4 should be thinking about what new work could be undertaken,
and that new programs should be sort after to be added to the suite.

Eleanor Dodson suggested that the Daresbury staff undertake the
writing of a new scaling program that would pick the best features
from the numerous existing programs.

David Rice also suggested to the committee that sets of data could
be contributed to Daresbury to be used as a data base of test data.

The secretary informed the meeting that he didn't want to undertake
work on new algorithms at that this stage and felt that the work
being done on production of a Unix version of CCP4, and on keywording,
and on graphics/X-windows, together with updates and contribution
to the LCF/Header work did not allow time for extra work. It would
also be necessary to put a high priority on getting Skewplanes to
work out of a vax environment. The unix system is now running and
a preliminary suite is available and the code being used on the Convex
is designed to be machine independent and to be transferable back to
a vax machine.

The secretary informed the meeting that a keywording system was being tested
at Daresbury which could be used by any terminal or command file
input or, by changing one logical name, will run with X-windows through
a menu system.

Peter Brick indicated to the meeting that he would produce
a general error reporting subroutine for CCPLIB.

\bigskip
{\it A date for the next meeting was set for Wednesday the 4th October 1989
at York for 11-30 am.}
