Structural Immunology: Unravelling TNF-α Multimerization and Receptor Activation

 

Our dynamic team aims to explore the molecular mechanisms of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) multimerization
and its role in immune signalling, using cutting-edge research at the intersection of structural biology and immunology.

 

About the Project

TNF-α is a crucial cytokine regulating inflammation and immune responses. By binding TNF receptors (TNFR1/2), it triggers
signalling pathways that influence cell survival, apoptosis, and inflammation. However, the structural basis of TNF-α multimerization and its impact on receptor activation remain largely unexplored.

 

This PhD project aims to dissect the molecular dynamics of TNF-α oligomerization and how it modulates receptor binding
and downstream signalling. Using biophysical techniques such as NMR and crystallography, along with cellular assays and computational modelling, the study will elucidate how TNF-α oligomerization influences receptor binding and downstream signalling.

Who Should Apply?

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a background in biochemistry, structural biology, or immunology.
Experience in protein expression, structural techniques, or computational modelling is desirable but not essential.

Funding

The studentship will provide:

• 3.5 year UK tuition fee waiver
• 3.5 year stipend at UKRI rates (for 2024/5 this will be £19,237 pa)

International students will be required to pay the difference between UK and overseas fees. For 2025/6 entry this will be £18,864 per year of study.

It may be possible to provide a full overseas fee waiver to an exceptional overseas candidate but this is not guaranteed.
