A technique for “map simulation” is described, which allows a map to be constructed for a known structure with the same statistical properties as a map from a target, unknown structure. The simulated map is used to construct problem-specific statistical targets. These targets may then be used in a variety of ways. Applications to phase improvement and model building are discussed.
