The University of Hamburg, the University Medical Center Hamburg- Eppendorf (UKE), the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter, the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Hamburg have jointly initiated the Research Consortium InfectoPhysics, http://infectophysics.org. Within this interdisciplinary program, a total of twelve partner groups structured in seven interdisciplinary projects will apply novel cutting edge approaches to depict structures, functions and dynamics of selected viral and bacterial proteins of clinically relevant pathogens.
Within this research collaboration central mechanisms of bacterial antibiotic resistance will be analyzed and we will look at key questions in its entirety using different and complementary cutting-edge technologies and methods in time resolved enzymology and protein crystallography. Particular the new most brilliant X-ray light sources (European XFEL & Petra IV) at DESY/Hamburg will be utilized to target the goals.
The participating institutions offer the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research with excellent technical facilities. In addition to professional qualification in the fields of molecular biology and protein chemistry the successful students/scientist will receive training in state-of-the-art techniques in crystallogenesis and serial crystallography. PhD candidates will be fully integrated into the structured doctoral programs of the partnering institutions and will have access to soft and key skill courses.
We are looking for the most excellent and motivated candidates with graduation in Structural Biology, Molecular Biology or Protein Chemistry. Applicants must hold a qualifying degree. Excellent communication skills and competent language abilities in English are a must.
The positions will start at the earliest April 1st 2018 with duration up to 3.5 yrs. The PhD position will be paid in accordance to the German Public Services Regulations TV-L up to E13 (65%). In case of equal qualification, people with disabilities will be given preference.
